WHO: John, Richard, Robin
WHAT: John finally getting his day to come out on top... or is he?
WHEN: Tuesday 24th Jan, afternoon
WHERE: a courtroom
WARNINGS: Extremely childish behaviour
"I don't know why you're wasting the court's time," John hissed at Richard as he shuffled his papers. Of course, he was representing himself in the assault case of Haveland v Lioncœur (and trust Richard to have a pretentious double letter in his name). There couldn't be a lawyer who would do a better job.
John sighed and checked his watch, waiting for the judge to join them. He wanted to get this over with quickly, let Richard get his penance, let his victory over the lot of them be assured at long last. Then he would take Isabelle out for dinner and show her a very good time, and maybe he'd be able to invite her to his home and bed at last. He was thinking of her with a half-smile on his face when the judge walked in, and he hurriedly snapped to attention.
"Your honour!" he trilled, glancing smugly at Richard. "How lovely to see you again."
"Yes yes. Shall we get on?" the judge grumbled, wishing his lunch break had been longer. He was one of the judges who respected John for his professionalism and ruthlessness in the courtroom, rather than one of the other judges who disliked John for his inability to lose a case gracefully, and his superior airs.
John had a couple of witnesses who would corroborate his statement, and a copy of the security footage, documenting the attack. It was clear he was going to win. He didn't understand why Richard wanted to fight this at all.
He just gave John a glance and shrugged, "have I ever taken anything laying down?" Even if it didn't appear there was any chance to truly win, he'd still fight. That part was still very much alive in him and while he couldn't duel his brother, the court was close enough. His employers weren't too pleased with all this, but he had a feeling most of it would go away.
The lawyer he'd gotten was alright. A good kid that had just shaken his head at all the evidence stacked against Richard, until Richard had made him aware of a key witness. It had seemed to perk him up.
When the judge appeared he rose and gave the man a nod, "your honor." And then went on ignoring his brother. Before he punched him again and this time in full view of a judge. It wouldn't do him any good.
John of course had a pre-prepared speech lined up, outlining the events of that day, emphasising the "unprovoked" attack in his own place of work. He had a senior lawyer colleague to back up his every word, and he had camera footage. What else did he need? He looked to Richard and his lawyer, wondering what they could possibly have on such overwhelming evidence, sneering at his brother.
"Your honour, I believe this evidence speaks for itself," he said, as if this entire procedure was beneath him.
"I'm inclined to agree," the judge said with a slight shrug. He nodded to Richard's lawyer. "Well? What have you got?"
He gave the lawyer a nod and a smile. He didn't envy the kid in having to go up against John, especially not with all that evidence. And despite disliking his brother, Richard had some respect for John's work method, nor was he expecting to get off without some sort of punishment.
The lawyer shuffled nervously before straightening, "your honor we aren't here to deny the facts. My client is well aware of the evidence. We're here to argue this attack wasn't unprovoked. My client acted rashly, but in the defense of a friend. In light of that, we want to argue for a lesser sentence, and for that we want to call Mr. Robert Hunter to the stand."
It was difficult to contain the grin that wanted to spread across his face. He could hear John's jaw drop as he opened those double doors to be escorted toward the judges stand. He was dressed nice, tie and everything with his hair combed to the side. He adjusted the tie, not once looking in John's direction before taking a seat. He may have played up the bruises to his face (make-up did wonders) as if they'd been there for a few weeks. He'd been stabbed, but no sense in not milking this for everything it was worth. John deserved every bit of it, and maybe someone to mop up the pile of spit hanging on the floor by his feet. He was one moment away from exploding.
Robin stood, hand on the Bible to read his oath and took a seat. Robin could still feel Richard's anger at how the situation had been blown out of proportion, but he was willing to do whatever he could to get back under his king's good graces.
"YOU!!" The words were out of John's mouth before he could stop himself. There was a high-pitched noise in his ears and he was almost panting with the suddenness of his shock and fury. Once again, at the eleventh hour, Robin Hood was kicking him down, snatching him from the very edge of victory. His fingernails dug into the table top, tearing and crumpling the paper before him, and something snapped. He whirled on Richard, teeth bared in a snarl. "This was all a set up! You did this! You both did this! You little-" He turned on Robin, leaping forward, fists clenched, practically spitting with rage.
"Mister Haveland! Pull yourself together or I will be forced to hold you in contempt!" the judge cried, startled at the sudden change. The bailiffs stepped forward, prepared to intercept John if he threw himself at Robin.
Seeing John leap up in a rage was only a little amusing. Well a lot but he hid his smile into his hands. When John turned on him, he spread his hands in a semi innocent way, but the smile gave him away. He still hadn't forgiven Robin, not entirely, but this somewhat made up for it. At least parts of it.
When John stepped forward though, he rose. His lawyer gave him a look that said 'sit down', and he knew the bailiffs would take care of it, but instinct was still that. Calmly he set his hands on the table as he sat down, giving his brother and odd look. He'd forgotten the last time he'd seen John this riled up.
Robin took his seat feigning that stunned look on his face. Well, that wasn't appropriate behavior. Not at all! Robin didn't flinch not once. He'd been expecting the outrage, and he had to do his best to keep his composure. Especially, in imagining the time he'd ran off with John's horse, prized horse during a castle raid. That part hadn't even been planned, but the look was the same. Complete rage.
Robin gave Richard a nod to continue.
John could barely think straight. Richard and Robin, bound together to destroy him. He saw the nod between them, knew they'd contrived to let him think he'd won, just to humiliate him once more at the final hurdle. He let out a howl of fury and frustration, hands outstretched as if to wring Robin's scrawny neck. "You filthy thief, you coward, lurking like a rat in the shadows to torment me!" he snarled, and the judge banged his gavel.
"Mister Haveland, you need to cool off over night I think. I hold you in contempt of court. Take him out of here. Case dismissed."
"NO! NO! HOW DARE YOU TOUCH ME! I AM THE KING!!" John tried to fight the bailiffs off, then shrieked as they took him by the shoulders, one on each side, and bodily dragged him thrashing from the courtroom. "I'LL GET YOU ROBIN HOOD IF ITS THE LAST THING I DO!!! RICHAAAAARD!!! I HATE YOU!!! I HATE YOU!!! IT'S SO MISERABLY UNFAIR!!! NOOOO-" His words were cut off by the door closing behind him, though his wailing could still be heard echoing down the corridor. The judge just shook his head in confusion.
"The things overwork will do to a man," he muttered.
Richard gave a frown of concern when John started ranting and raging. He had never seen his brother like this, not in a long while. It worried him. He may not like John, he may think John didn't deserve half the things he had but that didn't mean he stopped caring or being concerned. John was his brother.
Frowning he watched John be carried off and ran his fingers through his hair. He knew that going after his brother would be bad. He'd see him later, and try and fix this. He gave Robin a look that said the man wasn't forgiven just yet before nodding to the judge.
