He returned the kiss passionately, because he only had so much restraint, and wrapped his arms around her to keep her near. He kept the kiss for a long time before he broke it, knowing that any longer and he wouldn't be able to push her away. But he needed to trust her first, and charging in blindly again wouldn't help that.
He took a breath and released her, "probably best you go. Before I change my mind."
