Lena was still in hospital as the infection of her back was getting worse and not better. He would have been with her, of course, but once visiting hours were over he was forced to leave the hospital and all he did at home was worry. Which, in turn, worried Jamie. In order to let poor Jamie have some time to actually focus on the end of his senior year, Thomas purchased a few nice bottles of beer and he headed to Victor's place.

Victor was playing fetch with Ace when he heard the knock on the door. Ace immediately rushed over to it, but he wasn't barking, which Victor took as a good sign. "Do we have a visitor, boy?" Victor stood and dusted his pants off, shooting a grin at Kat. "I hope he doesn't jump up," he commented as he went to pull the door open.

"Come on, Ace, back up. Thomas! Hello!"

Feeling a little guilty for not calling first, Thomas waved while looking slightly ashamed. "Sorry I didn't call, I just...can I come in?"

"Of course you can come in," Victor replied as if Thomas shouldn't have to ask. He stepped aside and held Ace back so Thomas could move past them. "Kat's over, and this is Ace."

"Hello, Ace!" Thomas immediately put the beer down and crouched to pet the dog. "I love dogs. And Kat!"

She beamed at that, "Well I have to win some points. You already get all the boyfriend points."

"And you'll be great at it, and in the meantime you can fuss over the puppy." Smiling she ruffled Ace's fur. "And I don't think Ace minds one bit." She laughed then, "what and miss adorable uncle Thomas? Unlikely."

"You have way more points than you think you do," Victor assured her. "Way more." And then he scratched Ace's ears. "I don't mind one bit either because he's perfect! Aren't you, boy?"

"Just as long as adorable Uncle Thomas doesn't turn into Fugitive Thomas who stole a baby," Thomas said with an amused sigh. "I would love to have more, but we dodged a bullet with Jamie not having Huntington's. I'm not willing to risk it again."

That made Victor think. "I should maybe get tested to see if I'm a carrier for anything. My parents died young, before some things would have shown up. Just as a precaution."

"Very wise," Thomas nodded. "We had no idea because my grandparents died in a car accident so there was just no way my father even knew to look out for it."

She smiled to that, even though it didn't really matter. As long as she made him happy she was happy. "Please don't. I don't want to have to call my grandfather. But I can understand that."

"That is wise. I should probably do that too. My mother's mom she died giving birth so we don't know there. Besides Greek weirdness there's nothing from Hermes. I think. Best to be sure about things like that. Raincloud gives good ideas." She grinned at Thomas. "And if I am interrupting male bonding just let me know."

Thomas chuckled and he shook his head. "I don't want you to have to call your grandfather either! I promise, no babynapping."

"We'll do that then," Victor said, turning to kiss Kat lightly.

"Hah! You're not interrupting anything! I don't know if what Victor and I do when we're alone can really be referred to as 'male' anyway."

"Last week we spent two hours swapping recipes," Victor confirmed.

She returned the kiss happily, "before or after the trip? I don't mind either way."

She laughed to that, "Adorable, but still sometimes I figure not having a girl around might be nice." she made a face, "I'm just trying not to be one of those girls who insists on being present for all the things."

"We could make appointments now for after the trip, just in case they take while," Victor suggested.

"You're precious to me," Thomas informed his friend. "I would never not want you around. I just said the word 'precious', I should stop drinking. It's true though!"

"Sounds like a good plan to me." and she'd have some company for those doctor visits, which was never bad. It was still a good idea to get a check up.

She chuckled, "you had all of one beer? Wow Thomas, but yeah the same goes for me. Occasionally I have flaily moments."

"I'm a lightweight!" Thomas protested, placing his empty glass on the coffee table. "Before I stopped drinking so much I would try to keep up with my friends and that always led to passing out. Pre-Jamie, of course. But back then I put anything available into my body. It's kind of impressive I'm still here."

"The only drugs I ever did were alcohol and nicotine," Victor said with a shrug. "But I did drink myself silly for a year before joining the academy. Don't plan on ever doing that again."

"I once woke up in an alleyway with a heroin needle sticking out of my arm. But I never was known for making the best decisions at fifteen," Thomas said with a shake of his head. "I don't know how my mother didn't slap me."

"Wow," it was kind of strange to hear all that, and to know what the two had gone through. "I feel kind of impressive, considering the worst I do is enjoy a drink now and then. And even then not a lot. I guess I never did rebel that much."

"And I admire her restraint Thomas. I would have."

"Oh I would have too!" Thomas acknowledged. "I was horrible. I ran away three times and only came home because I was hungry. My poor parents had been worrying themselves sick and I was running around, tripping on acid, thinking I was the king of the world. I very much wasn't. But it did serve as a cautionary tale for my sisters as well as Jamie. Don't end up like Thomas."

"It just goes to show your growth now, that you only ever have two drinks. It served as a cautionary tale to future Thomas as well," Victor pointed out.

"Ah, you have a point there. I'm still shocked I didn't OD or accidentally walk into traffic or something. I did break an arm thinking I could fly once..."

"Your journey may have been a little crooked but I do like how you turned out," She smiled at her friend, "but seriously, I am glad you don't do that anymore."

I have never broken anything and let's hope it stays that way. The only time I had to go to the E.R. was during he very much fired Halloween." She made a face, "ugh now I'm worried I caught something from that stupid thing. Still not sure I wasn't seeing shit."

"I'm glad I don't either," Thomas assured her. "It was stupid and I stopped the day Jamie was born because he was so much more important."

"Well said," Victor smiled. Then he groaned, "oh god, that Halloween. I'm sure you didn't imagine it, and we'll get everything checked out," Victor said soothingly. "That was not an okay day."

"Well I have a scar that proves it, just not fun." she sighed, "Anyway enough rain clouds for today. Things will get checked out and it reminds me to get other appointments before other doctors yell at me."

Thomas tried very hard not to think about what that meant. "Medical testing is a great thing, but I look forward to not being stuck with needles, at least for a while," he admitted.

"They gave Lena a spinal tap yesterday. She made me sing her Cure songs while it was happening to be distracted. Sorry...more rain clouds. She was very good about it, but it was the first time I'd seen her back since- There were whip marks. It-it was horrible." The last few words were said at near whisper.

Victor leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. "Did you talk to her about it?"

"Yes," Thomas nodded. "I didn't want her to think I was avoiding it or anything. I just feel so horrible for her and I can't really do anything and it's so frustrating."

"I know how you feel, well at least sort of." She went to set her hand on Thomas' back, "I felt all sorts of powerless when Vic was in the hospital. I can only imagine this is so much worse. Is there anything we can do for you?"

"I don't imagine it's any worse," Thomas said. He knew when Victor had been in hospital he had been held hostage and then essentially killed. That had to be horrible, and in addition, Kat's sister had been there as well. "You are doing something for me. Keeping me company. I just- I was alone for so long and I didn't realise anyone could actually care about me like she does."

Victor gave Kat a squeeze without realising it as he said, "I really know how that feels."

"Exactly. And I don't want to lose her. I-I'm pretty sure I'm in love with her, and she's going through something so horrible, and I have no idea how to tell her. Or even if I should."

"Don't say it when she has the flu," she gave Victor a smirk and leaned into him. "But all joking aside, just say it. Right now she's hurting and going through a lot. I think she'll actually feel so much better knowing she's loved. I would."

She smiled at her friend and gave him another hug, then released him. "It's good seeing you happy. It might help."

"Okay," he breathed out, trying to steady his nerves. "Okay, I'll tell her. Oh god, I'm nervous now and she's not here! I've never really told anyone this before. Not like this. Well, I told Jamie's mother that, but I was sixteen and stupid. This is different."

"It's pretty great though," Victor beamed at Kat.

She laughed, "you are adorable Thomas. but Victor is right. It is pretty great. Bring flowers. Or something she likes." It was all sorts of adorable watching Thomas, "also breathe. You can tell her next time you visit."

"Remembering to breathe is very important," Thomas nodded. "Okay. I'll do that, thank you. I feel ridiculous, but I'm learning all of this as I go. I never expected it."

"I don't think she did either." Victor smiled at his friend, "but that's what makes it wonderful."

"Hey same here. I never have any clue what I'm doing," she smiled then, "but so far I'm doing pretty alright. And yeah, it really is wonderful."

"You're doing fantastic," Victor corrected her. "You take care of me all the time." He leaned over to kiss her hair.

"And when you're not there, he informs anyone in ear shot of that," Thomas added. "Repeatedly."

"Shut up, I'm happy," Victor said with a laugh.

She laughed to that, "I do like the ego boost here." Smiling she took Victor's hand, mainly because this was making her happy to hear it.

"And I like making you happy. When Lena feels better we should do another double date thing."

"I think that sounds excellent," Thomas grinned. "We went out with Lena's friend Piper and Lewis Carroll a few weeks ago!"

"Holy shit that is actually really awesome. I am envious of you getting to meet Lewis Carroll." She grinned, "this world is odd, knowing I can say that."
