Who: Maddy, Emma, Thomas, Jamie, and Charlotte Kemp
What: Waking up
When: Wednesday night/early Thursday morning
Where: Maddy's hospital room
Warnings: Discussion of torture, language, TBD

As soon as Maddy had burst through the hospital doors on her stretcher, she felt herself marginally unclench. True, people were shining lights in her eyes, and everything hurt. And they asked her all sorts of questions. And she had to get her head examined and patched up, and that kind of sucked. But the doctors had determined her concussion was mild, and put something in her IV to help her sleep. Oblivion came knocking quickly, and Maddy embraced it gratefully.

When she woke again, it was in a dim, private room. Her hands and arms were covered in clean white bandages, and she had an IV in one arm. She felt lighter than she had in the past three days, and it took her a while to put two and two together, and to realize she was on painkillers. Good ones, if the blissful feeling was any indication.

She tried to sit up, but that made things pull funny, so she didn't try too hard. She looked around for someone, so she could ask where she was. She hoped her mother would show up soon.

Emma had arrived at the hospital the moment the shop girl had phoned her. It had been her day off, which meant she was in civilian clothes and her co-workers had barred her from the room where they were working on Maddy. She took the time to message her other children, who all arrived dutifully, panic-stricken and pale-faced.

If her family could stop ending up in hospital, she would be very grateful.

While Maddy slept, Emma had sat in a corner and read, making the rest of her children wait in the waiting room so they didn't make noise. She had simply left the room to fetch some tea and when she returned, Maddy was awake.

The tea was placed on the meds rack and instantly forgotten. "Madeline!" Emma rushed over to her daughter and she planted a kiss on Maddy's head, gently. "You're awake! What happened?"

Emma couldn't believe what she was hearing, and it made her want to wrap her daughter up in her arms and never let her go. "Oh, sweetheart, I'm so sorry," she said, holding on to Maddy's hand while trying not to grip it too tightly.

"Of course I won't think you're crazy, lovey," Emma soothed. What else had been done to her little girl?

The conclusion that was easiest to jump to there, was that Maddy had been hallucinating. But her daughter had asked her not to assume anything like that, and so she slowly nodded. She had to admit, she liked the sentence about scary knives less.

"Madeline, I don't even know what to say," she admitted sadly.

Charlotte, hearing her mother speaking to someone, poked her head into the room, pleased to see Maddy awake. "Hey, you!" she said softly, and then she entered, followed by an exhausted and yet worried-looking Thomas. "My poor Maddy," Charlotte frowned.

Emma jumped to action, trying to calm her daughter down so she didn't injure herself any further. "Get out!" she yelled to Charlotte and Thomas, who looked shocked and frightened. Both of them complied, however, backing out like they had been burned.

"It's okay, they're gone." Emma said, glancing over Maddy to see if anything had been pulled out. "Sweetheart, they're gone now. It's okay."

"No, it's- It's alright, darling," Emma soothed. "They didn't know, but I should go tell them. They're worried about you. Will you be okay for a few moments?"

"Of course, sweetheart," Emma grabbed a glass and filled it with water before sticking a straw into it. "Do you need me to hold it?"

Emma did so and then she planted a kiss on Maddy's head again before heading back out into the waiting room where Thomas, Charlotte and Jamie were looking deeply concerned.

"She says someone took her and among other things, played mind games with her. She said...it wore your faces, Tommy and Charlotte. And that's why she screamed when she saw you."

"Wore our faces?" Thomas asked, confused. He glanced at Jamie, wondering if it was something supernatural. Jamie was the only one here who knew about that.
thomas_kemp: (I don't know)

Charlotte didn't understand what any of it meant, but she did know she wasn't going anywhere. Not until she knew Maddy was okay. "Fucking hell. If I'm just going to freak her out, I'll stay out here," she said firmly.

"Me too," Thomas echoed.

"Tommy, you need to go home and get some rest. You can come back tomorrow," Emma informed him.

He knew she was right, but he wanted to be with his sister. And if this was some immortal messing with her, he was going to have to explain it eventually. It was probably going to come off better when she didn't scream upon seeing his face. Hell, he should probably tell his mother, Anna and Charlotte too. But it would have to wait. "I suppose-" he said, non-committally. Instead he looked at his son to see what Jamie wanted to do.

"Dad, Grandma's right," Jamie said. "You're still recovering, you should get some rest. I'll stay here, maybe once she's calmer, I can go in and see her. She didn't say anything about me, did she?" he asked his grandmother.

Emma shook her head. "She didn't mention your name, Lovey."

It made Thomas feel a little better if Jamie was staying here. "I'll take you home and come back. And someone can drop Jamie home later," Charlotte promised Thomas.

He groaned, but finally nodded. "Okay. Just...tell her I love her?" he said, and he gave his mother and son a hug before letting Charlotte help him to her car.

Emma gave Jamie's shoulder a squeeze. "Let me just ask her if it's okay for you to come in," she said, and she ducked back into her daughter's room.

"Darling, Jamie's here. Is it okay if he comes in?"

Jamie hugged his dad goodbye. "I'll tell her," he promised. "You go and get some rest, OK? I'll call you if anything happens."

Maddy sat up when her mom came back in. "Hmm? Oh! Sure, sure," she said. "Send him in." For some reason, her tormentor had never changed into Jamie. She supposed that, when it had gotten the desired reactions out of her by turning into Tommy and Char, she didn't have to. Maddy still couldn't help but feel absurdly grateful.

Emma waved Jamie in as well and then she returned to her seat. She was relieved that, whatever had happened, it hadn't made Maddy afraid of her. "Do you need anything else, my darling?"

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-01 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
"They understand," Emma assured Maddy as she went to pour more water. "And they love you. How did you get away?" she asked as she handed the glass over.

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-01 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Maddy," Emma leaned forward to wipe her daughter's tears, even though Maddy had done so as well. "You did put up a fight. You asked to be brought here and you got yourself to safety when you could. You're talking about what you went through. That's fighting, my darling." Emma felt like she might burst into tears as well. Her daughter had experienced such horrible things and yet she was so strong and Emma was so proud.

"I have thought the same thing on occasion," Emma replied about the soul business. "Usually to help someone else. But you're free now."

Emma wanted to hug her darling grandson for distracting Maddy with happy memories. He was so precious. "You did look darling before the sneezing began," she added with a fond smile.

She didn't know to worry about someone mentioning selling their soul. To her, it was a figure of speech.

"Well the rash disappeared and the memory remains," Emma said with a grin. "I remember the daisies too. Pretty sure there's photos of it somewhere."

"She's really right. You went through a phase where you loved building forts out of the couch cushions and you liked wearing one of the lampshades on your head because it was round and looked a little like a helmet."

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-01 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Emma didn't remember that and she laughed. "What on Earth did Thomas think of that?"

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-01 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
The idea that Thomas kept nail polish remover around to clean up the antics of his sister was amusing to Emma and she chuckled. "Of course he did," she said fondly. "Though he used to paint his black with this really cheap stuff that smelled terrible. That took forever to come off too and it stained everything. I was glad when he grew out of that."

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-02 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"He did. And while most of it was stubborn and took forever to remove, other bits would flake off everywhere and I kept finding nail polish in everything. And when I asked him to try to be more careful with it, he flipped me off. Ah, it's nice to know those days are behind us," she said with a nostalgic smile.

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-02 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
"So do I," Emma agreed. She had always known Thomas would grow out of it, though she hoped he would do so before he ended up in prison. Not that she had expected him to do so because he had a child, but that was the way it happened.

"Are you tired, or should we continue to be distracting?" she asked her daughter. She was still quite worried about her.

[identity profile] and-in-between.insanejournal.com 2013-08-02 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I won't go anywhere," Emma promised her. "I'm staying right here. I love you, my darling girl." She had such retroactive fear, but her daughter was here now, and safe. Horrible things had been done to her, but for now she was out of danger and that was what mattered.
