WHO: Thomas, Jamie and Kat
WHAT: Going in for a test
WHEN: Friday the 1st
WHERE: Their house and then a...testy place...and then maybe a cafe or summat
WARNINGS: Blood and feels?



Thomas felt like he just might vomit every time he thought about the tests they were about to undertake. They had to give blood and then next week they had to go in for counselling while they waited for the results. Thomas wasn't entirely convinced the counselling would help. The only thing that would make him feel better was getting back two very negative results.

He had to be strong for his son, however, and so he was trying his best to smile. Kat had come over to offer moral support, and he was so grateful. "Everyone ready?"

Kat couldn't really imagine what either Jamie or Thomas were going through, but she was still determined to help. Just being there could be enough. It was the least she could do.

Smiling she nodded, "yeah. Just about." She hugged Jamie with one arm before hooking her arm through her best friends.

Jamie nodded, zipping up his coat and squeezing Kat. "As ready as I'll ever be, I guess." He looped his arm with Kat's, really grateful that she was here.

Thomas stepped forward to kiss his son's head. "I was thinking afterwards we might go get something to eat, hmm? Distract ourselves with fatty foods?"

She nodded as that sounded like a pretty good idea to her. "I'm all up for it."

Jamie smiled faintly. "This sounds like a good idea," he agreed. "Diner food, maybe?"

"Diner food it is." Maybe they could find some place that served breakfast all day and he could stuff himself with bacon.

He led them down to the car and once they were loaded up, he pulled out of the parking garage. It wasn't easy concentrating on driving while he was dreading something so much, but he managed to navigate them safely to the testing centre without incident.

While they all piled out, Thomas tried to lighten the mood. "I remember I used to distract you from getting needles by doing a puppet show. I didn't bring a puppet with me this time..."

She'd been quiet during most of the trip but once they arrived she took Jamie's hand. "Shame, would have been a sight." She glanced to Jamie, and decided to switch topics. "So how was the date? Were there kisses?"

"Hopefully I'll be OK without the puppets," Jamie said. "But I appreciate the thought."

"The date was nice," he said, finally smiling a little for real. "We're both total geeks. And yes, there were kisses."

That actually did make Thomas smile. He walked into the building with the two of them, feeling excited and happy for his son. He kept quiet, however, letting Jamie discuss it with his friend without his father squealing and intervention.

Once they entered the waiting room, he went to check them in and then he joined the other two again.

She sat beside Jamie, hoping to distract him and Thomas with talk of the date. "Oh, tell me more. Is he a good kisser, how much of a geek is he, etc?"

Jamie laughed. "We talked about dragons and Tolkien, and seeing a story from the point of the monster. It ended up being a great conversation." The other question made him laugh. "Yes, he's a good kisser."

Thomas hid his smile behind his hand, though not entirely successfully. He leaned forward and glanced at Jamie so that his son could see it.

"Wow, nerdier then I can get congratulations." She gave Thomas a smile as well before turning back to Jamie. "So will there be another date?"

Jamie couldn't help but grin, because he didn't keep secrets from these two, and they would have found out sooner or later anyway. "And here I thought that wasn't possible," he laughed. "Maybe? I don't know. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to another one."

Thomas' only interjection into the conversation was to ruffle Jamie's hair affectionately.

Then they called Jamie and Thomas' name and Thomas' stomach froze. He stood and let out a breath before turning to Kat. "Do you want to come in, or would you rather stay here?" He had asked before and knew she was welcome in the room, but not everyone really wanted to see their friends' blood.

"It isn't, it's why I'm impressed. I mean, I have to convert Vic, but I'm glad you're spared that." She smiled to her friend. "Well I say go do it because we should do double dates."

When they called the names she rose, "I'll come in and hold your hands. I don't mind."

That made Jamie laugh again. "I have no doubt you'll convert him," he assured his friend. "And I'll float the idea past him."

Jamie stood, his knees feeling like they might give out at any second. "Good, because having you there would be a good thing."

Thomas wrapped an arm around Jamie and gave him a squeeze before they headed through a pair of swinging doors and into one of the most sterile exam rooms Thomas had ever seen.

He had been gifted with good health for most of his life, which was good because he had also been granted very little money for part of it. He wasn't really used to doctor's offices unless he had brought Jamie in for check-ups. And he had certainly never done anything like this in front of his son before. He did his best to hide his anxiety, however, and when a nurse asked him who would be going first, Thomas raised his hand.

"I'll go," he volunteered. "Do you want me topless? ...er- I mean-"

The nursed saved him by laughing and saying, "it is easier to get things done that way. And jump up on the table. You other two can sit there," she said, pointing to some chairs before bustling out.

Thomas pulled his shirt off and hopped up onto the exam table and he faced Jamie and Kat. "Well, now I'm topless on a table with an audience. This is fine."

She grinned at Jamie, "oh that's going really well. He likes gaming, and it's not like we don't have a lot in common." She followed Jamie and Thomas into the room and settled on the chairs.

"Do a dance!" she grinned, "And spoken like someone who never has to face a gynecologist. Don't worry Thomas, you'll keep my fair honor in tact. I won't breathe a word although I may need smelling salts."

"Sounds like half the battle's won already," Jamie said, taking his own chair.

Jamie facepalmed. "Now there's an image I don't need, thank you, Kat," he laughed. "We have no smelling salts, but I can pinch you, if it comes to that."

Thomas snickered a little and then, to further keep the mood light, he raised his arms and shook his chest because it was kind of like a dance. "Jamie, prepare to fan your friend, I'm bringing sexy back."

"I don't think Victor is too far from being a nerd. I floated the idea of a Lord of the Rings viewing festival where we watch all three expanded editions of the movie and he actually seemed interested."

Laughing she set her hands on her face, "oh god I'm blind. And sorry Thomas, I think sexy is dead." Smiling she lowered her hands. "And no pinching or I'll tickle you."

"That would be nice, unless you're stealing him for just yourself?"

"Oh my god, Dad, stop that!" Jamie said, but he was laughing. "I'd say you wouldn't, but I know you, and you definitely would."

"That sounds fun, we can all be nerds together," Jamie said. "And apparently, he can find dates all on his own. He doesn't need to steal people's boyfriends."

"Awww," Thomas stopped dancing, and he looked terribly put out, though it was all in fun. "And here I thought I was doing my part for the world."

Thomas snorted at that. "Yes, Kat, I'm going to steal your boyfriend so we can drink no more than two beers and watch hobbits cavort together. I did mean for all of us." And then Jamie mentioned Lena and Thomas' cheeks coloured for a moment. "Yes yes, sometimes people find me oddly charming."

"No, not really. Sorry to crash your dreams Thomas." She was just glad the two were smiling. She'd done her part, so far.

She held up her hands at Thomas' words. "Just making sure." she smiled then at Thomas' reaction. "Ah the great Casanova. Tell me more." She grinned at Jamie, knowing him to be the source of information.
