When she'd gotten home, she'd gone to the doctor. Thomas confusion and headaches made her worry and after the attack the doctors had wanted her to come back in after th holiday. She'd sat at the office when they drew the blood, and when the doctor had returned with a frown she'd been a little concerned. But he'd given her the results, and those had made her pale a little. The doctor had said he could run other tests to confirm it, but there was a ninety percent chance it would come up again.

After a moment of freaking out the doctor had send her out and she wasn't sure what to do. There was a vague sense of panic, mixed with relief that there had been a conversation about this. She just hadn't expected kids for a few more years. She was completely unprepared for this.

For a while she'd sat on the curb near the doctor to get her head right, before making a plan. The first step would be to talk to Victor. She'd work out the other steps later. In a daze she walked home, startling herself when she was at the door. She hadn't even realized it. She ran her hand through her hair as she opened it and set her bag down before going to find Victor. "Hey."

Victor had been reading one of the textbooks he would be using in his classes in September, trying to get a jump on things. He set the book aside, however, when he heard Kat come home.

"Hey you," he stood and went to greet her, Ace happily running alongside him. "You look perplexed, what's up?"

It reminded her she still had a present for him, but she blinked at his greeting. "Yeah, just a bit." She smiled at Ace and ruffled his fur. It helped her calm down at least.

She didn't want him to worry though. "I went to see the doctor." Regardless she decided that she wouldn't let him not continue his schooling. She'd seen how he'd been in the school and for him to already be reading the books meant that he might just regret not going for it. And she couldn't do that. "Last kind of check up thing. Turns out there's hCG in my blood."

There was still that bit of panic, but this was Victor so she smiled. Hesitantly. "Which means I'm pregnant. At least the ninety percent chance. The doctor's running another test for me. And I need to sit down now."

When she brought up the doctor, his heart felt like it seized up a little. He had been expecting some kind of horrible revelation like she was dying of a rare blood cancer or some form of terrible thing. He had just proposed to her, and the world had a horrible way of taking the women he loved from him just when he thought everything was going perfectly.

And then she surprised him again. It wasn't something horrible, it was something wonderful, at least in his mind. He had always wanted to be a father and they had discussed having children. He did know, however, that this was far earlier than either of them had actually planned. Kat still had university to finish and she wanted to go to MIT. Victor was starting a course in the fall as well, though he wouldn't mind putting it off.

Whether he was excited about the possibility of a child or not, Kat was probably freaking out and that was more important right now. "Okay," he said gently, and he went to hug her. "Sitting down seems like a good idea."

He led her to the living room and sat with her on the sofa. "Do you need anything? Some water?"

The hug was more then appreciated. She could be excited once she'd let this settle in her head and knew how to handle it. And all of that was easier when she sat down. At the very least she could begin thinking of the next steps.

She shook her head and took his hand. "I'm good. I just need to think for a minute. And let this all kind of settle. It's just really, really big." She ran her fingers through her hair to help with that.

She turned to him though, "no matter what I don't want you giving up your course for this. You love this. I don't want you regretting. I know you say you won't, but still. Continue your plans." She took a breath, "how are you, anyway?"

"It's big. It's very big," he agreed. "We can discuss courses and things later," he said easily. He didn't mind giving up his course or going part time. They were lucky enough to be in a position where they could afford childcare, at least from his end. That was something, at least.

"I'm fine, sweetheart." He was forty-two and well off, he was sure he could handle this. "I'm wondering about you. No matter what you decide to do, I'll support you." If she wasn't ready yet, he understood completely. Yes, he wanted kids, but not at the expense of Kat. His life had room for a child, but only of hers did as well.

"I know. But I wouldn't have decided anything without telling you first." She gave a long sigh and ran her hands over her eyes. If she dealt with this the same way she dealt with every other aspect of her life she'd be okay. Which meant making plans.

It was soon, and she knew she'd be flaily about it but even when she'd gotten the news she'd decided to keep it. She'd decided that when they'd talked about it.

"Okay, still freaked but calmer. Step one if figuring out when. With that in mind I can figure out if I need to take a summer class to make up, or if I can finish off the year or just the semester. Once I know that I can figure out if I need to take a break or not." She looked to Victor, "which gives you room to continue your own classes."

"I don't mind going part time either," he suggested, because it meant continuing but still having time to help out. "And there's childcare eventually, but that's down the road. How do we figure out when? Do we book in with an OBGYN?"

She was grateful for his support and how he was making her feel a lot calmer. She felt lucky for having him. "Not necessary until later on. Even if it's too much for me I don't want you to not continue."

"Jesus," she offered with a sigh, "yeah. When I get the results back I can talk to mine and we can figure that out." She went to lace her fingers with his. "I'll talk to my family." she didn't want him to worry about her grandfather. "I can handle Hermes and mom might just argue a bit."

She gave another sigh before giving him a smile, "You can be excited. I think that's mixed up with some panic for me, but I'm alright."

They would see how it went. He didn't want to be an absent father either. He was fairly sure he would be perfectly content being a stay-at-home, full-time dad because the thought of it made him happier than his job ever had, and he did truly love working for the justice system. But remaining financially stable was a good idea too, and while he had quite a bit of money, it wasn't endless. These were things they would figure out as they went on and worked as a family.

The thought made him beam and he wrapped Kat in his arms. "I am excited, I just don't want you to feel pressured one way or the other," he said easily. "Honestly, if you're not ready, I understand. I'll be just as excited later."

She leaned into him and took comfort from his words and his presence. "You're not pressuring me." She looked up and kissed his jaw, "I decided to keep any baby when we talked about it. It's way, way sooner then I thought though." She shrugged, "I don't know if I'm ready, or that there is such a thing."

"But I know I love you, and despite it being a bit scary it'll be okay." She smiled to him, "so congratulations. You'll be a dad."

"I don't know if there is such a thing either, but I'm not going anywhere," he said easily. When she mentioned he would be a dad, he couldn't contain his joy. He grinned and buried his face in her shoulder. "I love you too," he said, his voice slightly muffled. "I'm really excited."

That just made her laugh and she set one arm around him. "I know. You're allowed to be. And you're adorable at it." She leaned her head against his. "I'm really thankful that you're not going anywhere by the way. And that you're helping me calm down. You're the best."

"Absolutely not." He lifted his head and kissed her cheek. "You're stuck with me. And I'll calm you down whenever you need. Do you need anything else? You realise I might become a nightmare trying to take care of you, right?"

Grinning she nodded. His excitement was enough to fuel her own. "Oh I realize that. It's worth it though. But no right now I don't need anything else. Just this is more then enough."

"Works for me." He pulled her close so he could wrap his arms around her. "We can stay here and use the office as a nursery, or we could get a new place if you'd like. I don't mind." His duplex was wonderful, and it hard a little yard as well as being across the street from a small, city park. Still, he didn't mind leaving it behind if she wanted somewhere bigger.

It was rather nice to be wrapped up so she cuddled close to him. "I like it here. If we need anything bigger in the future we can look at things then. We can look at things after the OBGYN thing if you like?" She leaned down to pet Ace, "and don't worry. We'll remember you puppy. You just get someone who can grow up with you."

"Sounds perfect," he said happily. "We'll have a little family." He kissed her hair and gave her a gentle squeeze. "It'll be wonderful."

She chuckled to that, and set one hand over her stomach. "Yeah. This means we should talk about a possible permanent move in. If you're alright with that."

"You're going to have my child," he said with a grin. "I think it's safe to say you're free to move in whenever you'd like. It's your home too now. Actually has been for awhile. We can make whatever changes you'd like to as well." He wasn't precious about anything really, except his guitar which he would be putting away so it was safe from small children. He had already moved it so Ace didn't knock it over.

She shook her head, "I like the place, and I just need a place for my games." She didn't need to change much, already loving the place. She smiled at him then kissed him, "I am a bit hungry though. Skipped lunch. So if you want to make something I'd love it."

"Of course!" he said cheerfully. He kissed her one more time and then stood, offering her a hand in case she wanted to come sit at the counter while he cooked. "And there's plenty of space for everything."

She took his hand and rose with a smile. "Thanks love. I appreciate it." With that she went to sit on the counter and settled her hand over her stomach, still a bit surprised by this. "So your in laws will get a kick off this. Want to invite Rose and her partner for dinner to break the news? We can invite her folks too if you like."

"Of course, honey." He started gathering ingredients and then he laughed. "Rose and Aislinn will be excited and oh goodness...my in-laws-" They were going to be over the moon. "I think they'll feel like they're getting a grandchild."

It was all in all, a better reaction then she felt she'd receive from her own family. "That's adorable. Hey let them know if they want to be involved they're free to do so." She felt that was only fair. They seemed to love Victor so much.

"They'll be overjoyed to hear that," he said honestly. And they had been like parents to him, so he was glad to hear Kat say it too. "So is your mother likely to want my head as a sacrifice?"
